How Often Should You Empty the Litter-Robot 3 Waste Drawer?
For a Litter-Robot 3, once a week is usually enough for one cat; twice a week is typical for two average-sized cats. Empty the waste drawer when the blue light flashes or, on a connected unit, the app indicates it is full—even if that is earlier than your usual bag-change day.
The number and size of your cats affect the interval. Use the typical timing as a starting point, then follow the drawer-full indication and your household’s actual pattern.
Full drawer or misplaced liner?
If the blue light flashes, check the drawer. A full drawer needs emptying. If it is already empty, check whether the liner rises above the sides: bag material sitting too high can cause a false drawer-full light.
Keeping those situations separate matters when planning refills. An alert immediately after fitting a fresh bag is not the same as a bag that has filled during normal use.
How to empty the drawer and replace the bag
- Pull out the waste drawer using its handle. Gather the edges of the used liner, close the bag and dispose of it.
- Open a fresh liner. Push its edges into each of the four tabs inside the drawer. If you use a regular trash bag, roll its edges down a few times before fitting it.
- Push the rest of the bag into the bottom. Keep the material below the top of the drawer sides, then slide the drawer closed.
- Press Reset on the machine. This zeroes the cat sensor.
If you use the Whisker app
For a Litter-Robot 3 connected to the Whisker app, also select Reset Gauge in the app’s Controls section when you empty the drawer. This resets the waste level shown in the app; pressing Reset on the machine is a separate action.
Do you need to press the Empty button?
No—not for a routine waste-drawer bag change. The Empty button starts a cycle that sends the litter from the globe into the waste drawer. To change the waste bag, pull out the drawer, replace the liner and press Reset. On an app-connected Litter-Robot 3, also use Reset Gauge in Controls.
Check the litter level while you are there
Each time you empty the drawer, check the litter level inside the globe. If it is below the raised fill line, add just enough litter to reach the line, then press Reset after adding it.
